Lead is a heavy metal naturally present in the earth’s crust and was widely utilised in construction and plumbing for many years due to its distinctive properties. However, in the late 19th century, it was discovered that lead is highly toxic to mammals. When high levels of this neurotoxin accumulate in the body, it can cause convulsions, coma, and even death.
The health risk that may be presented to employees about lead exposure in the workplace is governed by the Lead Regulations, OHS Act (85 of 1993) and one of the requirements is that companies should ensure that air monitoring is carried out by an Approved Lead Inspection Authority every year.
Determining and addressing these requirements is where lead assessments are necessary. During a lead evaluation, assigned specialists from Strat Environment will come and assess your workplace environment. At this point, the specialist will highlight problems that could be negatively affecting the capabilities and/or health of your employees, and describe how to properly address them.
